United vs City: Player Ratings
The player ratings are judged mainly from a visual perspective with a rating of 6.0/10.0 being an average performance.
Andre Onana: 6.5
I thought Andre Onana was probably our best player on the pitch tonight, which is saying something, considering he let in 3 goals. He made a few great saves against Haaland, including, most notably, stopping a close range header from the City frontman. He can't really be blamed for the goals and ultimately he wasn't given much chance to showcase his distribution due to a severe lack of passing options when he was on the ball. Could have easily seen 4 or 5 goals let in so I give him a rating of 6.5.
Diogo Dalot: 4.3
Very poor performance from the entire defence, but he was the least bad I guess. Didn't get beat often in 1v1s but he was caught unaware multiple times throughout the match with a disguised pass in behind the United back-line from City's left side, particularly from Gvardiol and Bernardo Silva. He tried to offer support going forward, and put a few crosses in, but in the end it was a fruitless effort. OK work-rate but just not good enough, giving him a rating of 4.3
Harry Maguire: 3.2
Just can't do it agaisnt a team like Manchester City. Didn't look confident with his headers and missed a few simple ones. Made mistakes which you can't afford to do against a team of such high quality. He just didnt seem to be working cohesively at all with Evans, completely switching off and not marking City players in the box, leaving them unmarked. As a United Centre-back, you can't let Erling Haaland have a free header from a cross. 3.2 for me, and that's being generous.
Jonny Evans: 3.5
Very similar performance to Maguire, simply not up to the quality required to compete at this level. Decent range of passing, with a few nice switches to progress the play and he seemed composed, at times, on the ball during the City press. However, he was too slow, and it was evident he couldn't keep up with the City attackers from the start. I almost feel sorry for him to be honest. 3.5
Victor Lindelof: 3.4
Again, another player I sympathise with, being tasked with playing as a left back today when he's not even confident on his left foot. He was set up to fail and that's exactly what he did. Lost track of Foden a few too many times and obviously that was costly. Going forward he didn't seem to have any sort of relationship with Rashford and, unsurprisingly, without a left foot, he wasn't able to create anything. Bad performance, but Ten Hag is asking a little too much from him. 3.4
Sofyan Amrabat: 4.8
Didn't do anything special but the last bit of grip we had on the game evaporated when he was subbed off. Was a little reckless at times but ultimately he helped shield the edge of our box when city had the ball and made it harder for them to control the game. All I can say really is at least he wasn't terrible. 4.8
Scott McTominay: 4.5
Not happy with this man's performance. Despite a few of our good chances coming through him, he is completely useless in our build-up. Every time a centre-half or Eriksen or Amrabat got the ball, he's hiding behind City players. Would have been miles better if he wasn't scared of receiving the ball in the middle of the park. Made it much harder for us to build up any sort of move and I don't understand the media making him out the be a much better player than he is. Granted, he tested Ederson and is dangerous around the city box, but I would rather have a player that can build an attack and combine with players than one that only pops up around the opposition box. 4.5 for me.
Christian Eriksen: 4.3
Eriksen got found out a little today. He's a great player that can dictate the pace of the game when United have the ball and some control over the game. United had neither, so he didn't really have much use in this game. At times he was being left alone as a single holding midfielder, with Mctominay and Mount often going forward, which is simply to much to ask from him. He didn't have the legs to carry out a strict defensive gameplan, but I'm sure we all could have guessed this before the match. On the ball he was fine but had very little defensive impact, getting him a 4.3.
Bruno Fernandes: 4.2
I will never understand why Bruno Fernandes on the right seems like a good idea. It needs to stop. Gvardiol had a field day, both offensively and defensively and Bruno was just ineffective from the right. He's clearly not got the pace or decisiveness to be a Premier League winger. Again, it was unsurprising to see another player underperform due to being played in a position he's unfamiliar in. You'd think, being the captain of the club, it would be a priority to play him in his position. Too much moaning and winging also doesn't help us. 4.2 for him.
Marcus Rashford: 4.3
Rashford had a few moments in the match but other than that, he was quite invisible. He played a nice ball into McTominay in the first half, creating a great chance for the midfielder, but that's about as far as creation from him goes. Missed a big chance later in the second half which was quite disappointing. He kept decent shape and seemed to track back when we were out of possession, but ultimately there wasn't enough effort going forward. 4.3.
Rasmus Hojlund: 4.6
A striker who experienced absolutely zero service. His only chance came from him latching on to an astray Foden backpass at which its probably fair to say his touch let him down. In the first half he looked sharp, and had some strong hold up play, getting wingers into the game when he did get the ball. Tried his best to deal with Onana's long balls and initiate a United press but ultimately wasn't really given a chance to do anything today. Thought he was very unlucky to give away the penalty in the first half but he did lose his man for a split second and it cost him in the end. Tough day for him: 4.6.
Substitutions:
Mason Mount: 4.0
I assume he was brought on to facilitate a more energetic and front-footed approach in the second-half, but that clearly didn't work. The only impact he really had was compromising our defensive security and shape. 4.0
Alejandro Garnacho: 5.0
Tried his best to get us something from the game but in the end lacked quality in the decisive moments. 5.0
Sergio Reguilon: 4.5
Didn't really notice him to be completely honest, no real impact. 4.5
Antony: 3.5
Came on and threw a tantrum. Completely unproffessional but he did echo my frustrations. 3.5
Anthony Martial: 4.0
Didn't notice him at all, not sure if he touched the ball. 4.0
